Dr. Jonathan Cherry is an Assistant Professor in Geography and Deputy Head of School at the School of History and Geography, Dublin City University. His research focuses on the evolution of the Irish landscape since the 17th century, emphasizing the role of the state, landowners, and institutions in shaping rural and urban spaces. Notable projects include compiling the Cavan fascicle of the RIA Irish Historic Towns Atlas and the digital humanities project 'Mapping the Ulster Covenant, 1912' with Dr. Arlene Crampsie, UCD. He currently serves as Honorary Secretary of the Geographical Society of Ireland.
His research interests include the transformation of Irish landscapes under colonial and postcolonial frameworks, the decline of landed estates, and the legacy of 'big houses' and planned settlements. He actively engages students in postgraduate research on historical geography topics such as commemorative spaces, toponymic landscapes, and memorialization practices.
Dr. Cherry’s publications span historical geography, memorial studies, and visual culture, with recent works analyzing World War I memorials in Ireland and the propaganda role of missionary imagery.
