Margaret Menninger is a Professor in the Department of History at Texas State University and Executive Director of the German Studies Association. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1998) and has held positions in publishing with Houghton Mifflin and Carl Hanser Verlag. Her research focuses on cultural philanthropy, civil society, and German bourgeois culture, with particular emphasis on Leipzig's cultural history. She is the author of A Serious Matter and True Joy (2022) and co-editor of The Total Work of Art (2016).
Education: A.B. (Harvard-Radcliffe, 1986), Rotary Scholar (Georg-August Universität Göttingen, 1986-87), A.M. and Ph.D. (Harvard, 1991/1998). Research supported by DAAD and the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C.
Research interests include the social history of music, cultural diplomacy, and Scandinavian history (especially Iceland). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on European history, including Germany since 1815, the Nazi era, and the Great War.
Her work bridges historical scholarship and cultural practice, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Recent publications explore Leipzig's cultural institutions and postwar Berlin music scenes. Awards include the NEH Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities.
