Margaret Baron

Margaret H. Baron, MD PhD, is a Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Senior Associate Dean for Education. She holds professorships in the Departments of Medicine - Hematology and Medical Oncology, Oncological Sciences, and Cell, Developmental, and Regenerative Biology, while also directing the MD-PhD Program and NIH-funded T32 Research Training Program in Molecular and Cellular Hematology.

Research Interests: Dr. Baron's work focuses on molecular mechanisms of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell fate specification and differentiation. Her lab uses mouse and human ES cell models to study signaling pathways in embryonic hematopoiesis, globin gene regulation, and erythroid progenitor development. Recent projects include high-throughput screens for erythroid maturation regulators and computational analysis of RNAseq data.

Advising & Grants: Dr. Baron co-founded the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology (DSCB) Multidisciplinary Training Area at Mount Sinai. She secured $6.6M in NIH grants to lead the New York Consortium for Kidney, Urological, and Hematological Research and Training and directs an NIH-funded T32 program in molecular hematology.

Labs & Teams: Her research is conducted at the Baron Laboratory, which focuses on erythropoiesis, enucleation, and ex vivo red blood cell production. She collaborates with the Tisch Cancer Institute and Black Family Stem Cell Institute.
