Marcos Luna is a Professor in the Geography and Sustainability Department at Salem State University, where he has served since 2004. He holds a Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware (2007) and an M.A. in Geography from California State University, Los Angeles (2000). His research focuses on environmental justice and geospatial techniques to address social and environmental inequities, with notable projects on drinking water contamination, housing discrimination, natural gas leaks, urban noise, and climate policy.
Luna teaches courses on environmental justice, climate change, GIS applications, and quantitative methods. He coordinates the graduate Geo-Information Sciences program and advises graduate students. He is a key member of the National Academies of Sciences committee on EJ mapping, the Massachusetts Environmental Justice Council, and the Massachusetts Energy Transformation Advisory Board. His work integrates academic scholarship with community advocacy, including roles with GreenRoots and Comunidades Enraizadas in Chelsea, MA.
His publications analyze EJ criteria, transportation equity, and geospatial tools for policy. Recent work includes a 2024 National Academies report on geospatial EJ tools and a 2023 study on boil-water alerts' impact on school absences in Jackson, Mississippi. He frequently presents on climate justice and EJ at conferences like the American Association of Geographers and Harvard University.
