Dr. Madeleine Scammell is a Professor of Environmental Health at Boston University School of Public Health and a JPB Environmental Health Fellow at Harvard School of Public Health. Her research focuses on community-driven and participatory approaches to environmental health, particularly addressing chronic kidney disease (CKDu) in Central America and urban environmental justice in Massachusetts. She leads studies on occupational risks, extreme heat exposure, and environmental justice, with a focus on marginalized communities.
Dr. Scammell holds a DSc in Environmental Health from Boston University and a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont. She teaches courses including PH 801: Community-Engaged Research and has authored over 100 publications on environmental health topics.
She has received prestigious awards, including the NIEHS/NIH Outstanding New Environmental Scientist Award (2017) for her work on Mesoamerican Nephropathy. Her research is funded by grants from NIH, NIEHS, EPA, and others, including leadership roles in the Boston University Superfund Research Center and the CURE Consortium.
Dr. Scammell serves on the Chelsea Board of Health and chairs the Science & Environmental Health Network. She actively collaborates with community organizations like GreenRoots and Alternatives for Community & Environment to bridge scientific research with community needs, emphasizing participatory approaches to environmental health challenges.
