Marco Maiuro serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University's Center for Archaeology, bringing extensive international experience from academic engagements in Italy, France, Germany, and the UK. His scholarly identity centers on rigorous interdisciplinary research bridging historical theory and archaeological evidence in ancient studies.
His research program critically examines economic structures and social dynamics across Mediterranean antiquity, with particular focus on imperial Roman resource management and long-term urban development patterns. Current book projects investigate Italy's urbanization trajectory from Roman unification through the Lombard era, while his editorial leadership of the Oxford Handbook of Pre-Roman Italy establishes foundational frameworks for pre-Republican studies. Methodologically, he integrates quantitative economic analysis with material culture studies to reconstruct ancient societal functions.
His research excellence is formally recognized through:
- Humboldt Fellowship for Advanced Researchers
- Gerda Henkel-Marie Curie Fellowship
Maiuro actively shapes academic communities through co-directing the Advanced Program of Ancient History and Art (APAHA), a Columbia-H2CU summer initiative that trains students in integrated archaeological fieldwork and art historical analysis. His leadership of the Villamagna excavation project demonstrates sustained commitment to generating primary data through hands-on archaeological direction.
