Maiuro Marco

Maiuro Marco is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the Department of Classics, Sapienza University of Rome, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University. He also serves as Co-Director of the Scuola di Alta Formazione sulla Tarda Antichità and Director of the Advanced Program in Ancient History and Art (APAHA). His roles include leadership in archaeological projects such as the European Archaeological Mission in Kosovo and the Villa Adriana initiative.

Education:

• 2020: Italian Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale for Full Professor in Ancient History
• 2012: Italian Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale for Associate Professor
• 2007: PhD in Classical Studies (co-tutelle, University of Trieste and CNRS-Paris/Clermont Ferrand)
• 2004: European MA in Cultural Heritage Management (University of Siena and Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene)

Research Interests: Marco’s work focuses on Late Antique cultural history, particularly peripheral cultures, ancient social and economic history, pre-Roman Italy, papyrology, epigraphy, urban history, and agrarian history. His projects integrate archaeological and textual evidence to explore socio-economic dynamics in antiquity.

Awards & Fellowships:

• Recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2013–2005)
• Member of the ERC PATRIMONIVM Scientific Board (2017–2022)
• Italian Academy Research Fellow (2022)

Labs/Teams: Directs archaeological missions in Kosovo and collaborates on projects at Villa Adriana and Stabiae. Leads the APAHA, fostering interdisciplinary research in ancient history and art.
