Alexander Ekserdjian is an Assistant Professor of the History of Art at Yale University, also affiliated with the Department of Classics. He holds a B.A. from St John’s College, University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology from Columbia University. His research focuses on ancient Mediterranean art, particularly the role of sculpted divine imagery in religious experience and material culture's contribution to Roman religion studies. Current projects include a monograph on Central Italian divine representations (3rd-1st centuries BCE), an article on inscribed art lists in Greek sanctuaries, and studies on votive body parts' modern reception and Etruscan art boundaries.
Ekserdjian has held fellowships at Columbia and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and participated in excavations including Hadrian’s Villa (Tivoli) with the APAHA team. His interdisciplinary work bridges theology, anthropology, and archaeology, emphasizing how visual art shaped ancient religious practices and identities.
