Marco Fraaije is a Full Professor at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Science and Engineering, leading the Molecular Enzymology group. He holds a PhD in Molecular Sciences from Wageningen University and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Pavia. His research focuses on enzyme engineering, biocatalysis, and redox enzymology, with applications in sustainable chemistry and environmental biotechnology. Fraaije has coordinated major EU projects like OXYGREEN, ROBOX, and DECADES, and serves on editorial boards of journals like FEBS Journal and Catalysts.
Education: PhD in Molecular Sciences (Wageningen University), postdoctoral research at University of Pavia. Academic career includes positions as Assistant (1999–2007) and Associate (2007–2012) Professor before becoming Full Professor in 2012.
Research interests emphasize oxidative enzymes, including flavoproteins and their roles in biocatalytic processes. He has developed novel enzymes for industrial applications, such as indigo production and lignin valorization. Key contributions include the Flavin-Tag method and advances in F420-dependent systems.
Awards: VICI grant (2016), BIOCAT-science award (2018). Active in professional societies (NBV, NVVM) and serves as board member of the Geological Museum Ammonietenhoeve. Coordinates international initiatives like COST Action COZYME and the Biotrans symposium series.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Fraaije Group, collaborating with industry partners via GECCO-biotech. Research integrates enzyme discovery, structural biology, and synthetic biology to address challenges in green chemistry.
