Prof. Marco Fraaije is a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on enzyme engineering, biocatalysis, and sustainable chemistry, with applications in industrial biotechnology. He leads projects like the ROBOX initiative, aiming to develop enzymes for eco-friendly industrial processes.
Key research areas include flavoprotein oxidases, monoamine oxidases, and lactoperoxidases. His work addresses substrate specificity, enzyme stability, and structural-functional relationships. Fraaije has contributed to over 329 publications and holds patents in enzyme applications.
Awarded the Biocat - Science 2018 Award and NWO VICI grant, he emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration. He co-organized the 14th BioTrans Symposium and has been involved in media engagements like the award-winning film 'Enzyme Engineering'.
His lab’s research spans enzyme characterization, structural biology, and industrial enzyme optimization, with datasets deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database. Fraaije’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing sustainable production and climate action.
