Marco Deriu is an Associate Professor of Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes at the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Enterprises of the University of Parma. He serves as President of the Master's Degree in Journalism, Editorial Culture, Environmental and Multimedia Communication (2021-2024) and previously served as President of the Bachelor Degree in Journalism and Publishing Culture (2018-2020). His academic career at the University of Parma spans from Researcher (2006-2020) to his current position as Associate Professor (since 2020).
Professor Deriu's research interests span multiple interconnected fields including:
- Environmental Communication and Sociology of Environmental Communication
- Political Communication and Sociology of Political Processes
- Gender Studies with focus on masculinity and violence against women
- Solidarity Economy and Alternative Economic Models
- Degrowth Theory and Post-Growth Economics

His recent scholarly work has focused on cultural regeneration during global crises, energy transition and democratic participation, decolonizing knowledge systems, and the intersection of masculinity studies with social transformation. Professor Deriu has examined how societal narratives shape our understanding of crises and how alternative imaginaries can foster more sustainable and equitable futures. His work often bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in community settings, particularly in environmental communication and gender-based violence prevention.
Professor Deriu has led significant research projects including:
- 'Research on gender harassment in study and work contexts and on violence in smartworking' (2020-2022)
- 'Evaluation of clinical outcomes related to the treatment path of perpetrators of gender-based violence' (2020-2021)
- 'Amplifying the image of change: Evaluation of narratives and dimensions of change regarding violence by men who have completed the LDV program' (2015-2017)
- 'Research-action on innovative models of intercultural mediation in the corporate context' (2014)
He serves as co-director of the 'Transizioni' book series published by Castelvecchi and is a member of several editorial boards including 'Ecologia della salute' and 'AG About Gender.' Professor Deriu is also a member of the 'Environmental Social Humanities Lab' at the University of Parma and the interdisciplinary 'TiLT Territori in Libera Transizione' laboratory.
