Marcelino Agis Villaverde

Marcelino Agis Villaverde (born June 17, 1963) is a renowned Galician philosopher and professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) since 1996. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from USC (1992) and has served as visiting professor at institutions worldwide, including the University of Perugia, Technische Universität Berlin, and universities in Japan and Mexico. His research focuses on philosophical hermeneutics, the history of philosophy, and the works of Paul Ricoeur.

Research interests include philosophical hermeneutics, the interpretation of philosophical discourse, and the legacy of thinkers like Ricoeur and Mircea Eliade. His work explores symbolic meaning, metaphorical language, and the intersection of philosophy with cultural identity and practical reason.

Awards include the Manuel Murguía Essay Award (2015) and the Concepción Arenal Humanities Research Award (2016). He is a member of numerous academic societies, including the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences (2024 correspondent member).

He has authored over 20 books, including Anatomy of Thinking (2020), The Traveling Father Sarmiento (2018), and History of Contemporary Galician Thought (2016). His works are translated into Spanish, English, Japanese, and Russian.

Leadership roles include Vice-Rector at USC (2002–2006), President of the Galicia Milenio Forum, and founder of the Sanxenxo Local Studies Seminar (2010).
