Marcela Pizarro Coloma

Dr. Marcela Pizarro Coloma is a Lecturer in Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. With over 20 years of experience in international journalism, she has worked with Al Jazeera English and Associated Press, covering major global events including 9/11, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and producing cultural documentaries.

Her research focuses on journalism and theory in the Global South, exploring the geopolitics of international news, cultural histories of media, and the politics of representation. She completed her AHRC-funded PhD in 2004 at the University of London, examining the work of Latin American cultural theorist Nelly Richard.

Pizarro Coloma has created impactful documentary series including Race Historicised: Epistemologies of Colour (2025), an animated series showcasing key thinkers in the Black radical tradition. She supervises research on media geopolitics, cultural histories, and independent news production.
