Dan Strutt

Dr. Dan Strutt is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies (MCCS) at Goldsmiths, University of London. He specializes in practice-based research at the intersection of digital media, dance performance, and creative economy studies. His work explores virtual embodiment, telematic performance, and the ethical implications of digital technologies in art.

Strutt holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Goldsmiths, with his doctoral research examining digital screen media's impact on reality perception. He currently leads AHRC-funded projects on motion capture streaming for sustainable, accessible metaverse performances. His research also intersects with creative economy dynamics, as seen in his co-authored book Fashion as Creative Economy (Polity, 2023).

Research Interests: Motion capture aesthetics, telematic dance practices, post-cinema theory, virtual reality applications, and micro-enterprise analysis in creative industries. His work bridges theoretical inquiry with practical innovation, such as developing tools like the Digital Dance Studio VR (DDS-VR) for immersive choreography.

Strutt has presented globally on virtual collaboration, including performances at the Being Human Festival and the Goldsmiths Mocap Streamer Showcase. He is affiliated with the Digital Culture Unit and contributes to the MA Film and Screen Studies program, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to media and performance studies.

Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator on AHRC projects on digital dance (2020–present). Collaborations include CREATe and Creativeworks London for creative economy research. His work addresses both technological innovation and its socio-ethical dimensions in art and culture.
