Prof. dr. Marcel Verweij has been Professor of Philosophical Ethics at Utrecht University since April 1, 2023, and is also Director of the Ethics Institute within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Humanities. Previously, he was Professor of Philosophy at Wageningen University & Research (2013–2023), where he led a team working on animal and environmental ethics, philosophy of technology, and public health. He has also held roles at Radboud University Medical Center and the University of Amsterdam.

Research Focus: Marcel’s work centers on practical ethics, especially public health ethics and vaccination ethics. He explores the normative foundations of health solidarity, sustainability, and the ethical responsibilities of governments, professionals, and citizens in health policy. His recent monograph Inducing Immunity? Justifying Immunization Policies in Times of Vaccine Hesitancy (2024, with Roland Pierik) addresses the ethics of immunization policy in democratic societies.

Teaching & Outreach: Marcel has taught ethics to students and professionals in philosophy, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nutrition. He co-founded the Public Health Ethics journal and the Erasmus Mundus MA in Applied Ethics. He frequently contributes to public debate through media appearances, op-eds, and policy consultations.
