Dr. Pita Verweij serves as Associate Professor in the Energy & Resources department at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences, affiliated with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. Her institutional presence spans teaching, research supervision, and committee roles since at least 2001.
Her research focuses on ecosystem services valuation, biodiversity conservation, and policy integration across tropical landscapes. With field experience in lowland forests, mountain grasslands, semi-arid, and humid ecosystems, she bridges ecological knowledge with spatial planning through participatory GIS and equity assessments. Recent work emphasizes nature-inclusive agriculture transitions, coffee landscape restoration, and climate-proof certification systems.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals dominant themes in tropical conservation policy (47%), agroecological transitions (29%), and equity-focused ecosystem service mapping (24%). Methodologically, she prioritizes spatial analysis and stakeholder co-production across Latin American, Southeast Asian, and European contexts.
