Marcel Verheijen is a part-time Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Applied Physics, affiliated with the Plasma & Materials Processing group under Prof. Erwin Kessels. He also works as a TEM application specialist at Philips Innovation Labs on the Eindhoven High Tech Campus, where he focuses on industrial materials characterization and failure analysis for yield improvement in semiconductors, OLEDs, and solar cells.
Academic Background:
- MSc in Chemistry, Radboud University Nijmegen
- PhD in 1995 under Prof. Piet Bennema, specializing in crystal growth and microscopy of fullerene (C60/C70) and incommensurately modulated crystals
His research spans high-resolution TEM characterization of nanomaterials, including nanowires, ALD-deposited nanostructures, and multi-layer systems. Key contributions include three-dimensional morphology studies of GaP-GaAs nanowires, twinning superlattices in InP nanowires, and sub-nanometer control of core/shell nanoparticles.
Publication Trends: Verheijen’s work focuses on advanced materials processing techniques like atomic layer deposition and transmission electron microscopy tomography, with applications in optoelectronics, solar cells, and catalysis. His studies emphasize structural control at atomic scales and industrial problem-solving.
Advising & Collaborations: He has co-authored numerous publications and acted as co-promotor for multiple PhD students, bridging academic research (at TU/e) and industrial R&D (at Philips) in materials science.
