Marc Michael Epstein is a Professor of Religion and Director of Jewish Studies at Vassar College since 1992. He holds the Mackie P. Davis and Norman H. Davis Chair. His work focuses on Jewish visual and material culture, illuminated manuscripts, and medieval religious art.
Education: BA, Oberlin College; MA, MPhil, PhD, Yale University. His PhD research included studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Research Interests: Jewish art and manuscripts, medieval religious texts, cultural intersections between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and the materiality of religious objects. His books include Skies of Parchment, Seas of Ink (2015) and The Medieval Haggadah (2011), recognized with major awards.
Professional Roles: Former Director of Sotheby’s Judaica department, consultant to museums like Temple Emanu-El, and curator of exhibitions. Active in adult Jewish education, earning the CSP Maimonides Award.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with institutions like the J. Paul Getty Museum on manuscript analysis, and integrates fieldwork into teaching through immersive programs.
