Prof. Rabbi Phil Lieberman serves as Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and Law, Classical and Mediterranean Studies, History, and Islamic Studies at Vanderbilt University. Currently on military leave, he also holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of History at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Additionally, he serves the United States Navy Reserve as a chaplain with the rank of captain, having previously served as command chaplain at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti (2021-2022).
Lieberman's scholarly work spans Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, and Near Eastern history, with particular focus on Jewish communities in the medieval Islamic world. His research examines religious law, economic life, cultural exchange, and biblical interpretation across historical periods. His interdisciplinary approach bridges religious studies, history, and legal scholarship.
His recent publications include The Fate of the Jews in the Early Islamic Near East (2022) and editorship of The Cambridge History of Judaism, volume 5 (2021). His translation of Maimonides' Guide to the Perplexed is forthcoming from Stanford University Press in 2024. His articles address diverse topics from biblical color terminology to financial instruments in post-biblical economies.
