Prof. Rabbi Daniel Sperber holds the Milan Roven Chair of Talmudic Research at Bar-Ilan University and serves as President of Bar-Ilan’s Jesselson Institute for Advanced Torah Studies. Additionally, he is the rabbi of the Menachem Zion Synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City.
His academic background:
- Ph.D. in Classics, Ancient History and Hebrew Studies from University College London
- Rabbinic ordination from Yeshivat Kol Torah
Professor Sperber's research centers on Talmud, Jewish customs, liturgy, and Roman Palestine. His major works include the 8-volume "Minhagei Yisrael" (documenting Jewish customs across the life cycle), "The City in Roman Palestine", and "On Changes in Jewish Liturgy: Options and Limitations". He examines historical evolution of Jewish practices through interdisciplinary lenses combining textual analysis with archaeological and socio-historical contexts.
His scientific awards:
- Israel Prize for research in Talmud and the history of Jewish Customs
As President of the Jesselson Institute, he leads advanced Torah scholarship initiatives, fostering research that bridges traditional rabbinic studies with modern academic methodologies while engaging contemporary issues in Jewish law and ethics.
