Rabbi Dr. Nehemia Polen is a Professor of Jewish Thought at Hebrew College’s Rabbinical School of Hebrew College, Boston. He holds a Ph.D. from Boston University, where he studied under Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. His research focuses on Hasidism, Kabbalah, and biblical texts like Leviticus and Numbers. Polen’s work bridges classical Jewish texts with contemporary spiritual practice, emphasizing themes of leadership, sacred ethics, and mystical thought.
Education: Ph.D. in Jewish Thought from Boston University, Yeshivat Ner Israel (Baltimore/Toronto), Harvard University (Daniel Jeremy Silver Fellow, 1994), Hebrew University (Visiting Scholar). Awards include the Ateret Zvi Prize (2024) and National Jewish Book Award (2002). His books include Stop, Look, Listen: Creating Shabbos through a Spiritual Lens and The Holy Fire.
Research interests include: biblical exegesis, Hasidic mysticism, leadership ethics, and Shabbat theology. Recent publications analyze Moses’ leadership failure (Numbers 20), the spiritual dimensions of Leviticus, and Hasidic women’s narratives.
Teaching: Focuses on rabbinical students, integrating textual study with spiritual formation. Courses emphasize prayer, Kabbalistic thought, and ethical leadership. Advises on interreligious dialogue through Hebrew College’s Miller Center.
Grants and Fellowships: National Endowment for the Humanities (1998-99), NEH-funded translation of Malkah Shapiro’s memoir, and academic leadership roles at Hebrew College.
