Dr. Devora Steinmetz is a faculty member at Hebrew College's Rabbinical School in Newton, MA, and also serves on the faculty of the Mandel Institute for Nonprofit Leadership. Her work bridges rabbinic text study with ethical engagement, emphasizing curiosity, generosity, and kinship in Jewish communal life.

Her research and teaching focus on Jewish Theology, Talmudic and Midrashic Interpretation, and Religious Imagination. She explores how biblical and rabbinic texts can deepen spiritual practice and foster empathy across differences.
Dr. Steinmetz has authored three books: From Father to Son: Kinship, Conflict, and Continuity in Genesis, Punishment and Freedom: The Rabbinic Construction of Criminal Law, and her recent Why Rain Comes From Above: Explorations in Religious Imagination (2024), which weaves texts into experiential religious reflection.
Outside academia, she engages with Gould Farm, a therapeutic community in Western Massachusetts, blending rural physical labor with mental health recovery support. Her public speaking on March 10, 2024, at Lehrhaus highlighted her contributions to Jewish education and communal solidarity.
