Prof. Marc Baldus is a full professor of Structural Biology at Utrecht University, leading the NMR Spectroscopy section at the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research. His expertise lies in magnetic resonance (NMR) methodologies to study biomolecular systems in their native environments. He holds roles including Scientific Director (2016–2019), Head of the NMR Section since 2010, and has been pivotal in advancing cellular solid-state NMR techniques.
Academically, Baldus earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from ETH Zurich (1996) and held postdoctoral positions at MIT and the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. His research focuses on membrane proteins, protein assembly, and molecular interactions within cells, using solid-state NMR combined with biophysical and cell biology approaches.
Key achievements include pioneering in-cell NMR studies, elucidating protein dynamics in membranes, and structural insights into BAM complexes and microtubules. His work has been recognized with awards like the Günther Laukien Prize (2014), EBSA Prize (2007), and the ICMRBS Founders Medal (2006). He has secured major grants, including NWO Vici and ERC Consolidator funds.
Baldus is actively involved in academic governance, serving on ERC panels, editorial boards (Biophysical Journal), and international committees (Experimental NMR Conference). His lab contributes to advancements in structural biology, catalysis, and biomaterials, bridging disciplines like chemistry, physics, and cell biology.
