Dr. Mara Wendebourg is a visiting researcher at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. She was a postdoctoral researcher with the GLOBALGOALS project in 2024 and remains a research fellow at the Earth Systems Governance Network. Mara is also a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature World Commission on Environmental Law (IUCN WCEL).

Mara’s research focuses on norm diffusion in international environmental law-making, particularly through scientific advisory bodies. Her work intersects climate change governance, ocean policy, and legal frameworks for sustainable development. Recent projects include analyzing institutional reforms in global sustainability governance and the legal implications of sea-level rise.
Mara’s publications reveal a strong emphasis on international environmental law, climate governance, and maritime law. Her 2024 book chapter on the Paris Agreement explores legal continuity in novel climate frameworks, while her 2023 article addresses maritime boundary challenges caused by rising sea levels.
