Dr. Mara Nicosia is a British Academy Newton International Fellow at Durham University's Department of Classics and Ancient History. Her research focuses on the Syriac rhetorical tradition, particularly the 9th-century treatise 'On Rhetoric' by Antony of Tagrit. She previously held postdoctoral positions at Universiteit Gent and completed her PhD at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale' in 2020. Nicosia specializes in Syriac rhetoric, Semitic languages, and Greco-Aramaic linguistic contact.
Education: BA (Oriental Languages, University of Catania, 2013), MA (Oriental Languages and Civilizations, University of Naples 'L'Orientale', 2015), PhD (University of Naples 'L'Orientale', 2020). She spent part of her doctoral studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris.
- Research Interests: Syriac rhetoric, Semitic philology, Greek-to-Syriac translations, Aristotelian philosophy transmission, Western Neo-Aramaic dialects
Publications include edited volumes like Syriac Lexis and Lexica (2024) and articles on linguistic contact, rhetorical theory, and ancient texts. She co-organized the 2024 conference 'Syriac Studies in the UK' and teaches courses on Edessa's cultural history.
