Dr Manuel Penades Fons is a Reader in International Commercial Law and Associate Director of the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution (CIGAD) at King's College London's Dickson Poon School of Law. He joined King’s in 2016 after roles at the London School of Economics, University of Warwick, and University of Valencia. He holds an LLM from LSE and degrees in Law and Business Studies from Valencia. His PhD explored the intersection of international commercial arbitration and cross-border insolvency. A non-practicing solicitor (England & Wales) and abogado (Spain), he previously worked in arbitration and clerked at Valencia's Commercial Court.
His research focuses on international arbitration, cross-border insolvency law, and EU conflict-of-law rules, emphasizing interdisciplinary challenges. He teaches Private International Law, Contract Law, International Commercial Arbitration, and Insurance Law.
Recent contributions include analyses of Brexit's legal implications, EU law’s impact on arbitration, and the interplay between insolvency and mediation. He co-chaired the IBA Toolkit on Insolvency and Arbitration, recognized for innovation. His work bridges academic theory and practical legal problems, with a focus on global governance challenges addressed through CIGAD.
