Mantha Zarmakoupi is the Morris Russell and Josephine Chidsey Williams Assistant Professor in Roman Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. She holds multidisciplinary degrees in architectural design (Athens), history/theory of architecture (Harvard), and classical archaeology (Oxford). Her research explores Hellenistic/Roman architecture, urbanism, and cultural landscapes, with a focus on socioeconomic contexts and digital methodologies.
Her current projects include directing underwater surveys around Delos/Rheneia and the central Aegean islands to study ancient maritime networks, co-leading the Delos Network examining ancient urban planning, and collaborating on ERASMUS+ digital learning initiatives for ancient cities. She also co-created the acclaimed research installation 'An Archaeology of Disability' exhibited at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale.
- Major Publications: Designing for Luxury on the Bay of Naples (2014), Shaping Roman Landscape (2023), and edited volumes including The Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum (2010) and Looking at the City (2023).
