Dr. Manikandan Subramanian is a Reader in Cardiovascular Inflammation and Deputy Director of Research at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London. His academic journey includes a medical degree from Kilpauk Medical College (India), a PhD in Immunology from the National Institute of Immunology, and postdoctoral training at Columbia University Medical Center (USA). He previously held roles as Senior Scientist and Assistant Professor at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.
His research focuses on understanding mechanisms of impaired inflammation resolution in atherosclerosis, particularly under dyslipidemia, with the goal of developing therapeutic strategies. Major themes include immune/inflammatory mechanisms in advanced atherosclerosis, obesity-driven plaque progression, and novel therapies for plaque stabilization.
Research tools include cell biology, animal models of obesity/atherosclerosis, and patient samples. Key collaborators include Prof. Mauro Perretti (WHRI) and Prof. Catherine Godson (UCD). Current funding comes from the British Heart Foundation (BHF), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and Barts Charity.
His group includes Postdocs (Dr. Stefan Russo, Dr. Umesh Dhawan) and PhD students (Aarushi Singhal, Purbasha Bhattacharya). Notable grants supported past work in India, including Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance fellowships.
Publications highlight advances in efferocytosis mechanisms, lipid metabolism's role in inflammation, and nanotherapeutics for resolving inflammation. His work bridges basic science and translational medicine in cardiovascular health.
