Julie Stone Peters is the H. Gordon Garbedian Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and an Affiliated Faculty Member at Columbia Law School. She holds a BA from Yale University, a PhD from Princeton University, and a JD from Columbia Law School. Her research focuses on law and humanities, media history, performance, film, digital culture, and legal cultures across historical periods. Peters has authored several influential books, including *Law as Performance* (Oxford UP, 2022) and *Theatre of the Book* (Oxford UP, 2000), which have received prestigious awards such as the ACLA Harry Levin Prize and the Beatrice White Award.
Her current projects include a forthcoming book on witchcraft and legal performance, collaborative work on *Fragments for a History of the Legal Body*, and two book projects tentatively titled *The Video and the Law* and *The War of the Cameras*. She has held fellowships from organizations including the Guggenheim Foundation and the Humboldt Foundation.
Peters is Director of Academic Careers Advising for PhD Students at Columbia and Co-Chair of the Theatre and Performance Ph.D. Program. She has also taught at Harvard, Stanford, and the Metropolitan Detention Center (Brooklyn). Her work bridges academia and public engagement, with essays in outlets like the *London Review of Books* and *New York Times Book Review*.
