Dr Peter Petkoff is a Senior Lecturer (Tutorial Fellow in Law) at Regent's Park College, University of Oxford, and Director of the Centre for Law and Religion. He also serves as Managing Editor of the Oxford Journal of Law and Religion and Legal Consultant on Media Freedom for the OSCE. His academic roles include teaching and interdisciplinary research on law, religion, and international relations, bringing together theologians, lawyers, and policymakers to address modern legal challenges.
His research focuses on sacred spaces under international law, religious law systems, and religion's intersection with human rights, media regulation, and sustainable development agendas. Key projects include a forthcoming Oxford University Press book on holy sites under international law and engagement with global networks like the G20 Forum on Religion and Sustainable Development.
Previously, he held a Reader position at Brunel University London, developing programs in intellectual property law and international cultural heritage law. His work bridges legal history (e.g., medieval legal cultures) with contemporary issues like digital finance regulation and apophatic theology's influence on legal thought.
Dr Petkoff collaborates internationally with religious leaders, human rights lawyers, and institutions such as the European Academy of Religion and the University of Notre Dame’s Religious Liberty Initiative. His interdisciplinary approach aims to shape policy impacting how religious communities interact with secular legal frameworks and civic values.
