Dr. Tom Asbridge is a Reader in Medieval History at Queen Mary University of London, specializing in the Crusades, knighthood, and medieval violence. He holds a BA from Cardiff University and a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London. His research explores the socio-political dynamics of the Crusader era, particularly contrasting Crusader violence with broader medieval warfare contexts.
Research & Publications: His major works include The Crusades: The War for the Holy Land (2010) and The Greatest Knight: The Remarkable Life of William Marshal (2015), translated into multiple languages. His articles analyze key events like the First Crusade, Antioch's founding, and Saladin-Richard I negotiations, using source material to reconstruct medieval perspectives.
Public Engagement: He co-curated an exhibition on the Battle of Lincoln (2023), founded the Teaching the Crusades Network, and developed digital humanities projects. He has also presented BBC documentaries on the Crusades and William Marshal.
Affiliations & Teaching: Joined Queen Mary in 1999 after teaching at St Andrews and Reading. Active in doctoral supervision, focusing on medieval military and religious history.
