- PhD in Criminology
Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian's research focuses on trauma, state crimes and criminology, surveillance, gender violence, law and society, and genocide studies. She specifically examines gender-based violence, violence against children in conflict-ridden areas, crimes of abuse of power in settler-colonial contexts, surveillance, securitisation, and social control. Her theoretical approach emphasizes de-colonial theorization and liberatory interventions, connecting the disciplines of criminology, social work, feminist critical theory, psycho-social intervention, and law and society. She stresses the importance of advancing de-colonial theorization and liberatory interventions as well as civic and social engagement.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Palestinian experiences under occupation, with particular attention to childhood, gender violence, and state criminality. Her work consistently analyzes the effects of militarism, securitisation, racism, settler colonialism, and gender-based discrimination on 'otherization' and collective trauma. She has developed influential concepts such as 'unchilding' to describe how childhood is stolen from children surviving the criminality, surveillance, and fear resulting from settler colonialism.
