Dr. Mani Sharpe is a Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Leeds, where they serve as Director of Film Studies within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies (Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures). They work specifically with the Centre for World Cinemas and Digital Cultures, teaching modules on cinema history, film theory, and digital cinema.
Their educational background includes a PhD from Newcastle University (2010-2014), an MA from Leeds (2008-2009), and a BA from Leeds (2004-2008).
Dr. Sharpe's research focuses on cinematic representations of war, particularly the Algerian War of Independence, with specialization in late-colonial French cinema. Their work examines how filmmakers engaged with the Algerian conflict as it was occurring, analyzing the intersection of film theory, war studies, and post-colonial studies. They have made significant contributions to understanding the relationship between cinematic form (particularly the close-up) and political representation in contexts of conflict and decolonization.
Dr. Sharpe's scholarly output includes the monograph Late-Colonial French Cinema: Filming the Algerian War of Independence (Edinburgh University Press, 2023), numerous journal articles, and they are currently editing War Faces on Screen: Photography, Film, and the Politics of Representation (Bloomsbury, 2025). They have also completed the public engagement project Facing the Mind (2020-2023), which connected film theory with mental health communities.
As an educator, Dr. Sharpe supervises MA/PhD students interested in cinema and war, as well as cinemas of decolonization more broadly, including militant cinema, Second/Third Cinema, and decolonial cinemas. They have served as a reviewer for multiple academic journals including Limina, French Historical Studies, and New Cinemas, and currently acts as a judge for The Global Undergraduate Awards in visual arts categories.
