Jonny Smith is a University Teaching Fellow in Film Studies at the Centre for World Cinemas and Digital Cultures, School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds. His teaching spans film history, theory, and analysis at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Previously, he taught at the University of Manchester, covering British Cinema, Hollywood, and early film history.
Research Interests: His research centers on British cinema, particularly post-war social realism, the British New Wave, and the intersection of film with architecture, placemaking, and urbanism. He has a focused interest in Brutalist architecture and its cinematic representation, especially in relation to class, masculinity, and post-war redevelopment.
Publication Trends: His recent and forthcoming publications explore the symbolic and narrative roles of Brutalist and modernist architecture in British films, analyzing works like The Offence (1973) and the filmography of Lindsay Anderson. Themes include cinematic London, working-class identity, and the aesthetic politics of post-war urban planning.
Professional Engagement: He is a member of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS), presents internationally, and engages in public outreach on class and architecture. He has collaborated with the University of Salford and The Working-Class Movement Library.
Upcoming Work: His monograph Brutalist Architecture in British Cinema is forthcoming with Bloomsbury in late 2025. He also has several book chapters in progress on masculinity, architectural stardom, and Lindsay Anderson.
