Dr. Mani Arumugam is a Group Leader and Associate Professor at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen. With over 15 years of experience studying the human microbiome, he leads the 'Microbiome Systems Biology' research group that investigates how gut microbiome influences health and diseases, host-microbiome interactions, and therapeutic modulation of gut microbiome.
Arumugam holds a Ph.D. in Computational Biology from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, 2010), an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2003), and a B.Tech. in Biotechnology from Anna University, India (1999). His interdisciplinary background bridges biotechnology and computer science.
His research focuses on the intersection of Systems Biology, Human Microbiome, Bioinformatics, Metagenomics, and Machine Learning. The Arumugam Group investigates how gut microbiome interactions with the host contribute to metabolic disorders like obesity and diabetes. They employ interdisciplinary approaches combining multi-omics data to study host-microbial crosstalk and develop therapeutic strategies for microbiome modulation.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on gut microbiome's role in major health conditions including type 2 diabetes, liver disease, colorectal cancer, and antibiotic recovery. His work demonstrates strong international collaboration across Denmark, India, and other countries, with significant contributions to understanding microbial signatures across different diseases and populations.
Arumugam actively participates in the academic community as an invited speaker and organizer at major conferences including the International Liver Congress, EMBO|EMBL Symposium on the Human Microbiome, and Gut Microbiota for Health World Summit. His research has attracted substantial attention, with publications in high-impact journals like Nature, Nature Medicine, and Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology.
His laboratory actively recruits Masters students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows in bioinformatics and microbiome research. He has received speaking and consulting fees from industry partners including Roche A/S, Lundbeck Pharma A/S, and SNIPR Biome ApS, reflecting the translational impact of his work.
