Manfred Beilharz

Manfred Beilharz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Western Australia (UWA), with an adjunct appointment in the same role. He teaches courses in Molecular Biology (SCIE3325), Molecular Genetics (GENE2230), and Medical Microbiology (MICR8832), and serves as Honours Co-ordinator. His research focuses on cancer, muscular dystrophy, immunology, and virology, with a particular emphasis on interferons, regulatory T cells, and tumor immunology. He has supervised multiple PhD students, including those studying Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, wine fermentation, and infections in pregnancy.

Key collaborations include work with Professor Paula Pitha-Rowe (Johns Hopkins), Professor Brian Williams (Monash Medical Centre), and Dr. Joseph Cummins (ABI, USA). His research has been funded by organizations such as the Health Department of Western Australia, NHMRC, and Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. Notable projects include studies on tea tree oil’s anticancer properties and clinical trials assessing interferon alpha’s efficacy against respiratory illnesses.
