Malcolm Thorburn is a 2024 Professor of Law and Chair in Legal, Ethical and Cultural Implications of Technological Innovation at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Previously, he held the Canada Research Chair in Crime, Security and Constitutionalism at Queen’s University (2008-2013) and clerked for Justice Louis LeBel at the Supreme Court of Canada (2000-2001). He has served as a visiting scholar at Sciences Po (2019), Australian National University (2008), Ludwig Maximilians University (2011), and CESDIP (2011), and was the Robert S. Campbell Visiting Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford (2011-2012).
His research focuses on theoretical issues in criminal justice and public law, including constitutional rights, proportionality reasoning, policing, and sentencing. He is co-editor of the Legal Theory Workshop, associate editor of the New Criminal Law Review, and serves on the editorial boards of Law and Philosophy and Criminal Law and Philosophy. His work has been published in leading journals such as the Yale Law Journal, Ratio Juris, and University of Toronto Law Journal, as well as books from Oxford University Press and Hart Publishing.
