Evan Fox-Decent is a Full Professor at McGill University's Faculty of Law and holds the Canada Research Chair in Cosmopolitan Law and Justice (Tier 1). His research focuses on legal and political theory, fiduciary law, international law, administrative law, and Indigenous legal issues. He has authored influential works such as Sovereignty’s Promise: The State as Fiduciary (2012) and co-authored Fiduciaries of Humanity (2016). His work bridges international law, constitutionalism, and ethical governance.
Education includes a PhD in Philosophy (2004) and a Juris Doctor (2000) from the University of Toronto, along with earlier degrees from the University of Manitoba. He previously served as a UN Human Rights Observer in Guatemala (1996–1999).
Research interests emphasize fiduciary relationships in law, sovereignty, human rights, and cosmopolitan legal justice. He has published widely in journals like the American Journal of International Law and Canadian Journal of Administrative Law and Practice.
Key awards include the shortlisted C.B. Macpherson Prize (2012) and his current Canada Research Chair. His SSHRC-supported project explores the cosmopolitan justice of international law. He collaborates on projects linking Indigenous sovereignty, climate governance, and global legal frameworks.
