Maki Hatanaka is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on economic globalization, sustainability governance, and the interplay between science, politics, and democracy in agri-food systems. She examines non-state sustainability mechanisms, including metrics, certifications, and participatory governance models, with a particular emphasis on food, agriculture, and environmental contexts. Her work spans diverse geographical regions, including Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, and the U.S., addressing topics like organic certification, Big Data in agriculture, and consumer cooperative movements.
Dr. Hatanaka’s research explores how data-driven approaches and multistakeholder initiatives shape sustainability outcomes. She critiques the role of experts and advocates for inclusive governance models that integrate non-expert perspectives. Her publications analyze global sustainability standards, the legitimacy of governance frameworks, and the socio-political dimensions of agricultural practices. She teaches courses on food systems, social change, and environmental sustainability at UVM.
Her work bridges critical agrifood studies and policy analysis, offering insights into the tensions between technocratic governance and participatory democracy. While no formal awards are listed, her contributions to sustainability discourse and global agrifood governance are widely recognized in academic circles. She actively participates in research networks and collaborates internationally to advance sustainable agriculture practices.
