Maja Godlewska is a Professor and Area Coordinator for Painting at the Department of Art & Art History, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She holds an MFA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, Wrocław, Poland, and a Postgraduate Scholarship from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland. Her research explores the spectacle of global tourism, the 'tourist gaze,' the instagrammable sublime, and the phenomenology of landscape.
Godlewska’s artistic work spans over 100 solo/group exhibitions globally, including the Bechtler Museum (NC), Zacheta National Gallery (Poland), and Burnie Regional Gallery (Australia). She has received numerous grants/fellowships, including Fulbright and Kosciuszko Foundation awards, and participated in residencies across six continents. Her practice integrates painting, installation, and performance, often using materials like gold leaf and poly mesh to interrogate environmental and cultural themes.
