Andrew David Stark is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University (NDSU), teaching Graphic Design, Illustration, Drawing, and Foundations courses. He holds an MFA from the University of North Dakota (2009) and a BFA from Minnesota State University Moorhead (2003). His work explores materiality, environmental themes, and human condition through painting, drawing, and mixed media, with exhibitions across regional and national venues.

Research/Art Focus: Stark’s practice bridges abstraction and figuration, investigating impermanence, transcendence, and landscape-environment relationships. His work emphasizes material experimentation with oil, charcoal, and mixed media, often addressing conceptual themes like modernist sublime and human-environment dynamics.
Exhibitions Highlights: Over 20 solo exhibitions since 2009, including notable shows at Ecce Gallery (Fargo), Plains Art Museum, and the North Dakota State Capital Building. His work is featured in corporate collections like Blue Cross Blue Shield and Gate City Bank, plus over 100 private collections.
Awards: Distinguished Creative Exhibition (UND, 2009), MSUM Juror’s Choice Award (2003), and multiple scholarships. His work has been profiled on Prairie Public TV’s Prairie Pulse.
Teaching & Service: Advises baccalaureate students, coordinates ArtBank and Flakoll Gallery at NDSU, and teaches at Plains Art Museum. Served as Visual Arts Coordinator for the North Dakota Governor’s School.
