Dr. Maiken Cavling Arendrup is a Clinical Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. She serves as Professor at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the University Hospital Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and as Head of the Mycology Unit at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen.
Dr. Arendrup's primary research interests focus on medical mycology, particularly the epidemiology, susceptibility testing, breakpoint development, diagnostics, and treatment of fungal infections. Her work has significantly advanced the understanding of antifungal resistance mechanisms and standardization of susceptibility testing methodologies.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Candida auris, antifungal susceptibility testing methodologies (particularly EUCAST standards), dermatophytes, and Aspergillus species. Her research often involves multicenter collaborations across Europe and addresses critical challenges in fungal diagnostics and treatment resistance.
Scientific awards include:
- Fritz Kauffman's reward (2003)
- The Danish Society for Clinical Microbiology's research award (2010)
- The European Confederation for Medical Mycology's Drouhet medal (2023)
Dr. Arendrup supervises multiple PhD, bachelor, and medical students. She chairs the EUCAST Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee Steering Committee and heads the EUCAST Development Laboratory for fungi. Her leadership extends to founding the Nordic Society of Medical Mycology (NSMM), where she served as president from 2003 to 2018, and serving as an editor for Drug Resistance Updates.
At Statens Serum Institut, she oversees the fungal laboratory responsible for routine and reference samples including culture, susceptibility testing, antigen- and antibody-detection, and PCR, as well as national surveillance of invasive Candida and Aspergillus infections.
