Professor Maija Kohonen-Corish is a faculty member at Macquarie University, holding roles as Research Leader at the MQ-affiliated Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and Head of the Woolcock Centre for Lung Cancer. She also serves as Conjoint Professor at Western Sydney University's School of Medicine and holds external positions at Garvan Institute of Medical Research and UNSW Sydney's Microbiome Research Centre.
Education:
- Molecular Genetics Certification (MHGSA), Human Genetics Society of Australasia (2005)
- PhD in Human Genetics, Australian National University (John Curtin School of Medical Research)
- MSc and BSc in Genetics, University of Helsinki, Finland
Research Interests: Her work focuses on molecular mechanisms of lung and colorectal cancers, including tumor biomarkers, Lynch Syndrome genetics, and microbiome-driven cancer therapies. She pioneered studies on inherited gene defects in Lynch Syndrome and developed novel mouse models for colon cancer. Current projects investigate antibiotic-chemotherapy synergy and microbiome-based diagnostic tools.
Recent Contributions: Her team demonstrated antibiotic use correlates with improved lung cancer survival during chemotherapy. Key research themes include DNA repair defects, cancer epigenetics, and translational oncology.
Awards:
- Cancer Institute NSW Fellowship
- MHGSA Certification in Molecular Genetics
Collaborations: Leads the Lung Cancer Network and collaborates with institutions including Macquarie Hospital, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital to advance cancer therapy strategies.
