Mahri Leonard-Fleckman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Classics at the College of the Holy Cross, with an affiliation to the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focuses on the Hebrew Bible, ancient Middle Eastern studies, and the history of ancient Israel/Palestine, Syria, and Iraq in the first millennium BCE. She explores scribal practices, empire dynamics, and literary historiography.
Her publications include monographs like Scribal Representations and Social Landscapes of the Iron Age Shephelah (2025) and The House of David (2016), as well as co-authored works such as The Book of Ruth (2017). She is currently working on a book on The Assyrian Royal Annals. Her public scholarship includes the award-winning Ponder: Contemplative Bible Study series (Liturgical Press).
Leonard-Fleckman’s recent articles address topics like the socio-political ambiguities of Timnah, Tyre’s portrayal in Ezekiel, and gendered representations in biblical narratives. She serves as co-editor of the Cambridge Elements: The Ancient Near Eastern World and the Bible series and actively contributes to editorial boards and academic committees.
