Magnus Domellöf is a Professor of Pediatrics and senior consultant physician at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Section of Pediatrics, Umeå University. He leads the N4 Research Group (www.n4researchgroup.se) and the NorthPop birth cohort study (www.northpop.se). His research focuses on early interventions to improve long-term health in children, emphasizing nutrition and brain development. Key areas include neonatal nutrition, preterm infant care, and the effects of prenatal and postnatal exposures on child health.
Major projects include the GRANDIOSA study (formula hydrolysed proteins), SWIDDICH (iodine supplementation in pregnancy), and SIDBI (iron supplementation). Domellöf also developed the Nutrium software for neonatal nutrition tracking, widely used in Sweden and internationally. His work addresses topics like delayed umbilical clamping, MFGM-enriched formula benefits, and optimizing energy intake in preterm infants to reduce retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
His research has demonstrated improved outcomes in areas such as reduced learning problems with iron supplementation in low-birth-weight infants and enhanced fine motor skills via delayed cord clamping. Domellöf collaborates in national/international networks (ESPGHAN, EFCNI) and leads studies on fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) for brain function assessment and neurofilament light as a biomarker for brain damage.
Funding includes grants from the Swedish Research Council and regional initiatives. He advises on clinical guidelines and chairs research groups examining gut microbiota and infant formula modifications. Domellöf’s work bridges clinical care, translational research, and population health, with a focus on preventive strategies for pediatric health challenges.
