Dr. Steven Abrams is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Dell Pediatric Research Institute at the Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in neonatology, focusing on nutritional practices for high-risk infants and bone metabolism in children. Previously, he held roles at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, including Director of Neonatal Nutrition Programs. His research emphasizes calcium, zinc, and iron metabolism in infants, particularly preterm growth optimization and specialized nutritional interventions.
Education: BS from MIT, MD from Ohio State University, pediatric residency at Akron Children’s Hospital, and fellowships in neonatology and nutritional research at NIH and Baylor College of Medicine.
Research Interests: Neonatal nutrition, mineral metabolism in children, and the impact of nutritional practices on preterm infant outcomes. He advocates for multi-disciplinary approaches to neonatal care and has contributed to national dietary guidelines. His work spans clinical studies on lipid emulsions, vitamin D effects, and maternal dietary patterns influencing birth outcomes.
Professional Affiliations: American Academy of Pediatrics (Committee on Nutrition), Society for Pediatric Research, and American Society for Nutrition’s Medical Nutrition Council. He served on the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
Grants and Labs: Leads studies on infant formula safety, bone health interventions, and human milk fortification. His lab investigates nutritional strategies for preterm infants and their long-term growth outcomes. Collaborates on large-scale clinical trials assessing lipid formulations and vitamin supplementation in neonatal care.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Dell Pediatric Research Institute, focusing on translational research in neonatal nutrition and pediatric health. Engages in interdisciplinary projects with nutrition scientists, clinicians, and epidemiologists to advance evidence-based care practices.
