Gregory Guthrie is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine. He is affiliated with the Children's Nutrition Research Center, where he holds both an office and laboratory space. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) in neonates, particularly the role of lipid emulsion components in disease progression. Dr. Guthrie utilizes a neonatal piglet model to study physiological and molecular changes related to cholestasis and liver dysfunction in preterm infants.
Dr. Guthrie received his BS from Louisiana State University (2005), MS from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (2007), and PhD from the University of Florida (2013).
His research interests revolve around neonatal nutrition and liver health. Key areas include the impact of lipid emulsions on cholestasis, the synergistic effects of phytosterols and inflammation on liver disease, and the development of treatments for PNALD. He also investigates how parenteral nutrition affects bile acid metabolism, gut microbiota, and neurodevelopment in preterm infants. His work integrates clinical, biochemical, and molecular approaches to address these critical health issues in neonatal care.
Guthrie's recent publications explore the relationship between lipid emulsion composition and liver disease in neonates, focusing on phytosterol depletion, bile acid dynamics, and the efficacy of interventions like rifampicin. His studies highlight the importance of lipid emulsion choice in managing cholestasis and improving outcomes in preterm infants on long-term parenteral nutrition.
Dr. Guthrie has secured grant funding from organizations including the ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation, the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, and the Digestive Diseases Center TMC. His funded projects include investigating synergistic effects of phytosterols and inflammation on PNALD, developing models of biliary atresia in piglets, and examining the role of parenteral lipids in obstructive cholestasis. He is a member of the American Society for Nutrition, American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and Sigma Xi.
His laboratory is part of the Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine, where he collaborates on interdisciplinary research projects focused on pediatric nutrition and liver health.
