Maggie Hutcheson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Museum Studies at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information (iSchool). She specializes in cultural heritage, community-engaged art, and museum practices. Her roles include teaching courses such as MSL4000Y (Museum Studies Capstone), MSL3900H (The Emerging Museum Professional), and others focused on ethics, leadership, and curatorial practice.
Dr. Hutcheson holds a PhD from York University, where her research centered on place-based memory practices. She co-founded the community art collective 'Department of Public Memory' and authored the Ontario Arts Council’s handbook on community-engaged art. She previously served as Lead Curator and Program Director for the Toronto Ward Museum’s Block by Block program, recognized with the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation.
Her research explores museums as agents of social change, grassroots counter-monuments, and co-creative practices. She actively collaborates with organizations like the CBC, Jumblies Theatre, and the Ontario Arts Council. She co-founded the Community and Cultural Spaces Trust to preserve affordable arts spaces in Toronto’s west end.
Dr. Hutcheson is a member of the Ontario Museums Association and the American Alliance of Museums. She advises students on museum planning, ethics, and leadership while advocating for inclusive and community-driven cultural practices.
