Mafalda Dâmaso serves as a Part-time Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute and as a Researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She leads work packages in two Horizon Europe projects (2025-2028): ANIMA MUNDI, examining the European animation industry ecosystem's geopolitical potential, and StreamSCAPES, analyzing how cultural and creative industries support sustainable climate transition. Additionally, she is Principal Investigator for the REBOOT project at Erasmus University Rotterdam, focused on European film industry competitiveness (2023-2026), with total grant contributions amounting to €11.5 million.
Dr. Dâmaso holds a PhD in Visual Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London, an MA in Politics (European Studies) from UCLouvain, and a BSc in Sociology from ISCTE-Lisbon University Institute. Her academic career includes positions at King's College London, Goldsmiths, University of London, the Catholic University of Paris, the University of the Arts London, and the Centre on Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California.
Her research centers on the intersection of cultural and media policy, foreign policy, and sustainable development with emphasis on the European Union's external action. Key areas include cultural diplomacy, geopolitics of culture, and how cultural industries can support sustainable transitions. Her work has appeared in leading publications including the International Journal of Cultural Policy, Journal of Arts and International Affairs, and Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy. She is editing 'The European Union as a Global Cultural Power' (De Gruyter, 2025) and co-editing 'Towards a Regenerative Cultural Policy' for the International Journal of Cultural Policy (2025).
Dr. Dâmaso's research has been cited by the European Parliament, European Council, and European Commission. She addressed the European Parliament's CULT Committee in 2024 on EU cultural diplomacy and in 2021 on cultural workers' status. Beyond academia, she led research for Cultural Action Europe supporting the European Parliament's work on artists' status and served as EU policy expert for the Culture For Health consortium.

Trilingual in English, French, and Portuguese, Dr. Dâmaso actively advises sectoral, national, and European organizations on EU cultural and media policy. As a Portuguese, European, and British citizen, she supports UK-based organizations including the British Foreign Policy Group and Creative UK on a pro bono basis to strengthen UK-EU relations.
