Maegan McNerney Azar is a Professor of Acting and Directing and Chair of the Theatre Arts Department at Furman University. She has been a faculty member since 2010 and holds leadership roles in professional theatre organizations, including Past President of the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) and South Carolina Theatre Association (SCTA). Her work spans acting, directing, and educational leadership in theatre, with notable directing credits such as What the Constitution Means to Me and The Taming. Azar’s research focuses on ensemble-based physical theatre, inclusive pedagogy, and solo storytelling.
Education: M.F.A. in Acting Pedagogy from The University of Alabama and B.S. in Theatre from East Tennessee State University. Professional affiliations include the National Alliance of Acting Teachers and Actors' Equity Association. Awards include the 2023 SETC Suzanne M. Davis Award and 2020 SCICU Excellence in Teaching Award.
Her freelance work appears at venues like Lean Ensemble Theater and The Warehouse Theatre. She co-directs educational theatre tours and has trained at institutions like Accademia dell’Arte in Italy and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Azar’s career integrates artistic innovation with community engagement, emphasizing theatrical education and social impact.
